SEDAL
Luxembourg Army Mine Clearance Service
For many years, the Luxembourg Army's mine clearance service has been clearing the national territory of explosive hazards from the two world wars.
First, it was a matter of freeing essential infrastructure from thousands of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, which had been the source of many difficulties during the reconstruction and development of the country. Gradually, the authorities realized that it was not only the mines, but also the whole range of other explosive devices still scattered across the terrain that were endangering human lives.

The name of the service remained, especially at the popular level, but the type of intervention changed significantly: from mine clearance, in the strict sense of the word, to decontamination. This is how the service survived, over the decades following the end of the Second World War, all the restructurings of the Army, because the omnipresence of dud munitions has fully justified their presence until today.
